Marriage Documents
Early marriages were recorded in a ledger by a county clerk. They were hand-written by the clerk and recorded only basic information such as date and names. Later marrages records came to be known as marriage licenses and used printed forms. These forms and the regulations that governed them required much more information to be collected.
